I have been considering pursuing a career as an air traffic controller. I live in Atlanta. I am about to graduate from law school, but I do not want to practice law. Thus, I have been looking at other career paths.
How much training is required prior to starting work as an air traffic controller? What is the starting salary at busy airports like Atlanta? On average, how often do you see a salary increase?
Any information that anyone might want to offer would be very helpful!

17 is based around Mason City, Iowa. It is approach for MSP, and high Alt transition to ORD. After 2200C it takes on south departures/arrivals to MSP, and any high alt. traffic basically in S. Minnesota and N. Iowa.
It might not be on the caliber of ORD or ATL ground ops, but the guys and gals are worth gold for the work they do.

I am doing flight training now and about to graduate within the next year. Seeing that I probably can't pay back loans with an entry level flight job (ie flight instructor), I am thinking about going into this... am i insane?

starting salary is less than 40k and most new guys are lucky if they ever see 100k. the old timers have wages based on an old contract and they keep the median salary high.

if you think a the pay for flight instructors is bad then wait until you see what a regional FO makes. ATC make good money, but you'll need to go to school for it. just because you're a pilot doesn't mean you're anywhere near qualified for ATC.

It's not insane. This job rocks. I'm a Air Traffic Controller... but it's crazy hard. I had to cram and learn everything about ATC in 15 weeks because I'm in the Army but we had to learn everything the FAA has as well as military. It can be ridiculously stressful, but the pilots know what they're doing. I can't imagine working at a center though... a kazillion aircraft in your hands.

This is my dream, amazing as it is. Once I get out of high school I'm applying immediatlety for an air traffic control position. Just like they said, you don't think aboutt he stress tyou think about callsigns and eveyrhting.
If anyone's wondering, I'm a Pro ATC controller in FSX. Although not as stressful, it can get pretty close sometimes.
You need to get on VATsim for Flight Simulator. Closet you will EVER come to Real airtraffic simulation. Heck some ATC on vatsim are real ATC :).
