It's only a representation, and one on a mercator projection to boot. The world is not flat, but the map is. If a plane was flying from Hawaii to Europe, for example, the shortest route is right over the north pole. I guess a plane should go straight up off the map, then reappear over Russia, but the simulation just shows the planes zipping along the far northern latitudes.

"high velocity air planes" in the pole regions just seem to be fast- due to the problem of map projection the poles are stretched!!! thus the planes seemingly travel at hypersonic speed ;-)
